The Stress Effect

Leaders are not immune to stress. It permeates our lives and affects the quality of our performance, relationships, and health. Good leaders make sound decisions under stress.

The stress effect recognizes that leaders who disregard signals that stress is on the rise can lose access to two important mental abilities—cognitive intelligence and emotional intelligence. When leaders experience diminishing capacity in these areas, the quality of their decisions suffers.

As a leader, you must recognize that 1) stress is increasing and 2) nothing is being done to halt its climb. Failure to respond appropriately to high stress can result in Catastrophic Leadership Failure. Having a plan in place to manage stress before it gets too high is a requirement for anyone, especially a leader.

Awareness and understanding are keys to building a Stress Resilient System™ to manage the stress effect. In this way, you can safeguard access to your full complement of cognitive and emotional intelligences and the ability to use them in tandem to make sound decisions.
